The Explorers, an annual full-color magazine published in November of each year by Petroleum News, features both oil and gas companies exploring in Alaska, and the exploration history and geology of the state's hydrocarbon provinces.
The oil and gas regions include both producing areas and non-producing provinces that are oil and/or gas-prone. The producing regions covered in two separate chapters in The Explorers are the Cook Inlet basin and Northern Alaska, which includes onshore and the Beaufort Sea. The non-producing regions are in three chapters' Interior Alaska basins; Alaska Peninsula and the North Aleutian basin; and the Arctic offshore. Maps for each province are included in The Explorers.
Oil and gas explorers featured in the magazine include big producers such as BP, which is largely looking for new oil in existing fields; aggressive explorers such as ConocoPhillips and Anadarko, which also have Alaska production; small independent explorers such as Brooks Range, which is targeting smaller accumulations left behind by the bigger companies; and new North Slope producers such as Pioneer and Eni.

General Petroleum, an ExxonMobil predecessor, established its first office in Alaska in 1921, spending the next several years examining oil seepages at Cape Simpson near Barrow and spudding its first well at Yakataga Beach in 1925.
Among the surprises in the 92-page magazine: ExxonMobil subsequently drilled exploration wells in almost every oil-and-gas-prone basin in the state; selected the Prudhoe discovery well site; employed well-known Alaska geologist Gill Mull and equally renowned oil scout Stu Gustafson, more recently of the Armstrong fame; set standards worldwide for Arctic design; failed to defend itself publicly in the 1989 Prince William Sounds oil spill; was instrumental in the design and construction of several oil fields on the North Slope, including Prudhoe Bay and Kuparuk; and was the impetus behind Point McIntyre being developed.

Harnessing a Giant: 40 years at Prudhoe Bay Special $6.95 per copy While supplies last! Print Edition

|
Forty years ago, billions of barrels of oil were
discovered under the windswept coast of Alaska's
North Slope. The Prudhoe Bay field brought
worldwide attention to the new and thinly
populated state, and thrust it into the
forefront of United States energy production.
Harnessing a Giant: 40 Years at Prudhoe Bay is a
132-page, full-color magazine that tells the
fascinating story - parts of which have not been
told before - of the people and events that led
to the discovery of North America's largest oil
field. It also covers the period when the
discovery was announced and, to a lesser extent,
what has happened since at this northernmost
giant, which is expected to play a major role in
natural gas production for American markets in the not too distant
future.
