MANAGEMENT – The Nwt & Nunavut Chamber of Mines has appointed Tom Hoefer to the position of executive director, effective Sept. 6. Hoefer is well known for promoting and advancing Canada’s northern resource industry. He most recently served as the director of mineral and petroleum resources for the federal Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. Hoefer’s experience over the past 25 years has encompassed exploration, mining, regulation and sustainable development in both the private and public sectors.
“Tom is passionate about a sustainable northern mining industry and has an impressive track record for building positive relationships and getting things done,” said John Kearney, the chamber’s president. “His leadership and credibility is valued by our board of directors and respected by our members and stakeholders. We are excited about his appointment and look forward to his working with government, communities and our other stakeholders to help sustain and grow our important mineral industry and its many opportunities and benefits.”
Hoefer’s appointment is intended to strengthen the group’s ability to address industry needs as well as the chamber’s new strategic plan. One of Hoefer’s first objectives will be to expand the group into Nunavut by opening a new office in Iqaluit by 2011.
