SME conference to cover critical minerals from mine to showroom

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., in partnership with Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, is hosting the Critical Minerals 2014 conference, a three-day event that focuses on rare earths, critical minerals and their impacts on the global economy.

“Critical materials support a myriad of market sectors from communications and transportation, to energy and electronics, to the cars we drive,” said SME Deputy Executive Director John Hayden. “Research and development, as well as marketing innovations, will ensure global production of these minerals to meet society’s increasing demands.”

Under the theme “Rare Earths and Beyond: Mines, Markets and Manufacturing,” the conference will evaluate where rare earth markets are today, as well as identify and consider other elements and minerals that are or may become critical. Sessions feature overviews of those minerals considered critical and updates on national critical materials strategies.

SME says the Critical Minerals 2014 conference provides opportunity to hear first-hand experiences from the experts in a dynamic industry that is changing the global perception of sustainable supply from the mine to showroom.

Keynote session topics include “Our Futures are Tied to New Technologies Made Possible by Rare Metals,” and “Rare Earths: The Quintessential Critical Minerals.”

The technical program includes presentations on specific markets and projects by leading geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, financiers and developers.

Critical Minerals 2014 will be held August 3-5, 2014 at the Westin Downtown Hotel in Denver, Colorado. AusIMM and SME hosted a similar event in Perth, Western Australia in 2013.
