Cominco to look for gas north of Red Dog

Cominco Alaska Inc. has applied to explore for gas in the Wulik basin north of Red Dog. The company has shallow gas leases in the area — the first to be issued under the state's shallow gas leasing program which started in 2000.

The state said Cominco is proposing to build two gravel drill pads connected by one mile of primitive road.

The project is about 10 miles north of the Red Dog zinc mine in Northwest Alaska in sections 16 and 21 of 32N-19W, Kateel Meridian. Construction would take place before freeze up this year.

Nikiski unit application in works

Marathon Oil Co. told the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission June 28 during discussions about the location of a well Unocal has proposed in the Nikiski area that there were negotiations under way for a unit in the adjacent area.

As of June 29, the state was expecting a unit application in the area, but had not yet received it. Major oil and gas lease acreage owners in the immediate area of the proposed well are Unocal Alaska Resources and Marathon.
