Seismic activity planned for Beaufort, Chukchi seas this summer

The whaling captains’ associations of the communities of Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Barrow, Wainwright and Point Hope on Alaska’s North Slope have signed a conflict avoidance agreement with companies planning to carry out industrial activities in the open waters of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas during 2006. The planned activities include seismic surveys by Shell, ConocoPhillips and Houston, Texas-based GX Technologies in the Chukchi Sea; and by Shell in the Beaufort Sea.

The agreement comes after intense negotiations between the Native communities and the oil and gas companies, culminating in the annual open water meeting held in Anchorage April 18-21. The communities are concerned that industrial activities will disrupt offshore subsistence hunting. As part of the conflict avoidance agreement, the oil and gas companies have agreed to a series of measures for monitoring and mitigating the impacts of their work, as well as limiting the level of disturbance.
