Chevron to drill up to 6 wells at White Hills this winter season

Chevron is planning to drill up to six exploration wells at its White Hills prospect in the 2007-08 winter drilling season, with the potential for additional wells in subsequent years.

The company told the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation it “plans to conduct a regional, multi-year onshore oil and gas exploration drilling program during the winter months on the North Slope.”

The half-a-million-acre While Hills prospect is in the Brooks Range Foothills, west of the Sagavanirktok River and east of the Colville River, and extends six to 41 miles south of the Kuparuk River unit.

Seven potential first-season well locations are included in Chevron’s application for approval of an oil discharge prevention and contingency plan: Smilodon (section 9, range 4 north, township 9 east, Umiat Meridian), Mastodon (6-3N-9E,UM), Panthera (27-6N-9E,UM), Stegodon (34-6N-8E,UM), Gulo (8-6N-10E,UM), Megatherium (27-3N-9E,UM) and Titanothere (8-2N-9E,UM).

In addition to those with locations, the application lists six other wells by name — Glyptodont, Dinictic, Mammoth, Indrico, Woolly and Creodont — 13 in all.

Chevron said mobilization would begin with a staging area and camp at the Franklin Bluffs pad, Milepost 39.6 along the Dalton Highway, during the fall and early winter.

In addition to its description of up to six wells this season and the potential for additional wells in subsequent years, the company also described its plans as: “Three to seven wells would be drilling during each of the upcoming two winter drilling seasons.”
