Public forum on offshore drilling Aug. 26 in Anchorage

There will be a Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement (formerly MMS) forum in Anchorage tomorrow, Aug. 26, from 8 am-Noon at the Dena'ina Center with new Director Michael Bromwich.

Doors on the third floor open at 7 am.

The forums are being held around the country and are designed to collect information and views about deepwater drilling safety reforms, well containment, and oil spill response, which Director Bromwich will consider in evaluating whether to recommend any modifications to the scope or duration of the deepwater drilling suspensions announced by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on July 12.

Though Alaska's OCS leases are not considered deepwater, Salazar has included them in the current moratorium.

Though oral testimony will not be allowed at this forum, development and environmental groups are encouraging people to attend the event to demonstrate to Bromwich their support, or not, for Alaska OCS development and to complete written comment cards.

The deadline for submitting written comments is Sept. 17.
