Second coastal area opens for tundra travel

Yesterday the Alaska Department of Natural Resources opened the western coastal area of state land on the North Slope for winter off-road tundra travel. The agency had opened the eastern coastal area on the previous day. Both areas have now met the off-road vehicle travel criteria of a snow depth of at least six inches and ground temperatures below minus 5 C at a depth of 30 centimeters.

A vehicle operator planning off-road travel requires an appropriate permit from DNR and needs to avoid or protect any areas where snow cover is thin, DNR says.

DNR has yet to announce the opening of the lower and upper foothills areas of state Arctic lands.
