Leases issued under federal Beaufort Sea Sale 202 stand

The U.S. District Court in Alaska has ruled in favor of the issuance of leases for Beaufort Sea Sale 202 held in April 2007 by the U.S. Department of the Interiorís Minerals Management Service.

MMS said this morning that it is ďvery pleasedĒ with the courtís Jan. 8 decision to allow the continuation of leasing on the outer continental shelf in Alaska. The agency said the ruling demonstrates the sound environmental research MMS conducts before each sale and furthers the development of much needed energy for America.

Plaintiffs in the case sought to rescind the oil and gas leases issued in Sale 202 until MMS prepared a supplemental environmental impact statement. MMS said the court determined that the MMS decision process using an environmental assessment in conjunction with an environmental impact statement analyzing impacts to the Beaufort Sea area was sufficient.

Beaufort Sea Sale 202 was held on April 18, 2007, in Anchorage. The MMS issued 90 leases off Alaskaís northern coast with high bids totaling $42 million.
