• Interior Secretary Gale Norton will visit Alaska within the next two months.

• As this issue of PNA goes to press, Gov. Tony Knowles is talking to fellow governors at the National Governors’ Association annual conference in Washington, D.C, about the development of Alaska’s energy resources, including natural gas and oil in ANWR. Knowles’ agenda includes meetings with President George Bush, Department of Interior Secretary Gale Norton and Department of Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham.

• The Alaska Legislature is reportedly considering placing a representative in Washington, D.C., who could lobby for the opening of ANWR.

• Requests have been made by PNA and others to Gov. Tony Knowles to reinstate an ANWR coordinator for the Governor’s office in D.C.

• In mid-February the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission passed a resolution saying it would support drilling in ANWR but only with a moratorium placed on further offshore oil exploration and development.
