BP applies for Liberty gravel mine site

BP Exploration (Alaska) wants to develop a new material site on the North Slope to aid construction at the Liberty project.

The Liberty mine site would cover around 63 acres west of Deadhorse and adjacent to the Duck Island mine site in sections 6 and 7 of township 10 north, range 16 east, Umiat Meridian.

BP plans to buy 1 million cubic yards of material from the mine over five years.

The company plans to develop Liberty from existing Endicott facilities and the gravel would go primarily to expanding the satellite drilling island in Foggy Island Bay. BP also plans to use some material for building a boat launch at the main production island and for repairing and improving the Sagavanirktok River bridge.

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Mining, Land and Water has issued a preliminary decision on the request and will accept comments on the matter through March 11 at 5 p.m. For more information, contact Melissa Head, natural resource specialist, at [email protected] or 907-451-2770.
