Petroleum News Bakken debuts; Ray Tyson heads up news team

Petroleum News, a weekly newspaper based in Anchorage, Alaska, is launching a sister publication that will cover the oil-rich Bakken resource play in North Dakota, Saskatchewan Montana and Manitoba. Former Anchorage Times business editor and Platts associate editor Ray Tyson will lead the editorial team.

Debuting April 15, Petroleum News Bakken will publish on the first and third Sundays of each month until it goes weekly in early 2013. Between the semi-monthly issues, readers will receive breaking news via electronic bulletins.

Similar to its sister publication in Alaska, the Bakken newspaper will be written by experienced oil and gas reporters for industry readers, including financial analysts and E&P company executives, directors, managers, team leaders and chiefs of exploration, geosciences, petrophysics, completions, production, new ventures, engineering, development, drilling, logistics and procurement.

“Too much news is generated from press releases, reprinted without the insight of an experienced journalist who understands the industry and thus can put the information in context,” said Kay Cashman, Petroleum News publisher and executive editor.

“Our writers scout for news the old-fashioned way — digging through government agency files, scrutinizing SEC filings and developing contacts within oil companies,” she said.

Petroleum News Bakken will cover the oil companies working in the Bakken; technical advances in drilling and production; and the geology of the Bakken as a heterogeneous resource play with multiple play types including, but not limited to, Sanish, Three Forks, Rough Rider, Scallion, Elm Coulee, Nesson Anticline, Parshall and Saskatchewan.

The newspaper will be available in both print and electronic formats.

Bakken conference April 2-4

The annual conference, hosted by Minot Lodging Expo and Dawa Solutions Group, is designed to connect investors with oil and gas companies, service firms, and real estate developers in the Bakken region.
