Upper foothills open for off-road travel

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources announced Feb. 16 that it has opened the upper foothills area of state lands in northern Alaska for off-road tundra travel. Conditions in the area have met the required criteria of nine inches of snow and temperatures below minus 5 degrees Celsius at depths of 20 centimeters, DNR said.

The opening only applies to operators with state off-road travel permits. Operators should avoid any areas where the snow cover is thin, or use special construction method in these areas, DNR said.

The lower foothills area opened on Jan. 24, with the eastern coastal area opening on Jan. 6 and the western coastal area opening on Jan. 5.
