Forest fined for clean water violations
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Aug. 29 that Forest Oil Corp. has agreed to pay $813,000 in civil penalties for Clean Water Act violations at the company’s Osprey platform in Cook Inlet.
Between January 2001 and July 2002, when Forest Oil conducted exploratory operations from the Osprey platform, discharges from the platform were required to comply with the Cook Inlet Oil and Gas Exploration General Permit, EPA said.
When Forest Oil began production activities at the platform in July 2002 it was ineligible for coverage under the exploration general permit and has been discharging wastewater under an individual National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit.
EPA said that according to Forest Oil’s discharge monitoring reports, between January 2001 and July 2005 there were approximately 2,600 effluent limit violations, most for sanitary and domestic wastewater discharges.
