Conservation group buys 37 acres near Anchor River

by The Associated Press

The Nature Conservancy has bought 37 acres near Anchor River to protect the area against encroaching development.

The purchase is part of a broader project between the national environmental group and the Homer-based Kachemak Heritage Land Trust to protect the area from what some say is a big increase in recreational cabins and RV parks.

“It’s gotten very popular over the years because it has such an outrageous fishery, and it’s so easy to get there,” said Barb Seaman, the land trust’s executive director.

The Nature Conservancy also hopes to buy valuable fish habitat at the mouth of the river.

The Anchor River boasts the largest steelhead run in Southcentral Alaska, excluding Kodiak Island. It also has healthy runs of king and silver salmon and Dolly Varden.
