French company has eyes on Alberta

Air Liquide, the world’s largest industrial gases firm, is eying Alberta to invest more than C$1 billion in the next eight years, rating the province as the possible Gulf Coast of the future.

After 86 years of doing business in Alberta, the French giant now believes Alberta is one of the “hottest areas” in meeting the global demand for oil, said company Chairman Benoit Potier.

The company’s current presence is “nothing compared with the potential.”

Air Liquide supplies a wide range of auxiliary chemicals, gases and materials that will be in heavy demand as Alberta expands its activities in converting coal, bitumen and petroleum coke to synthetic gas.

Its expression of interest coincides with the Alberta government’s push to establish a possible C$8.5 billion integrated upgrader, refinery, petrochemical and electrical power complex which is intended to keep more of the value-added end of the hydrocarbon business in the province.

Potier said Air Liquide is open to discussing a role in that facility, probably through its clients.
