Wind power grant for Native villages

The Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association Inc. has received a federal grant of $128,000 to work on a hybrid electric generation system incorporating wind and diesel power.

The association is hoping to develop the systems for six Alaska villages in the Aleutians and the Pribilofs, where winds tend to be strong.

The Indian Energy and Economic Development grant comes from an agency of the Interior Department, and it’s a follow-up to an initial grant last year.

The 2006 grant, awarded Aug. 18, will eventually help lower fuel costs for the Alaska Peninsula/Aleutian villages of False Pass, King Cove, Nikolski and Sand Point, along with St. George and St. Paul in the Pribilofs. Those communities are currently dependent on diesel generators for their electricity.

Last year’s grant was used to collect data on winds in the target villages and to train operators for the six communities. This year’s money will be used for community meetings on the plans, environmental assessments, eagle monitoring and other technical steps needed before the wind turbines can be installed.

Financing for the wind turbines themselves is expected to come from the Alaska Energy Authority and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utility Service.
