Murkowski names commissioners, AG

Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski has named two commissioners and the state’s attorney general.

The governor said March 31 that David Marquez has been appointed attorney general, McKie Campbell commissioner of the Department of Fish and Game and Kurt Fredriksson commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Marquez, 59, is a graduate of Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin School of Law. He has practiced law in Alaska for more than 30 years, primarily in the natural resource area. He was general counsel for Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. and worked for ARCO for more than 20 years as an associate general counsel, vice president and chief counsel and vice president of external affairs and environment, health and safety.

Marquez current is the acting deputy attorney general for the Civil Division of the Alaska Department of Law, and has also served as chief assistant attorney general, legislative and regulations section.

Murkowski noted at a press conference announcing the appointments that Marquez’ experience in the oil and gas arena would be helpful in the state’s negotiations over fiscal provisions for an Alaska gas pipeline.

Fredriksson, 54, has a bachelor’s degree in geography and a master’s degree in environmental studies from California State University Fullerton. He worked in the Office of Coastal Management from 1979 to 1990 before moving to the Department of Environmental Conservation, where he has served as acting commissioner, deputy commissioner and Spill Prevention and Response Division directory.

Campbell, 54, is a graduate of Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. A former deputy commissioner of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Campbell also served as deputy chief of staff for Alaska Gov. Walter Hickel and as a special assistant to the commissioner of the Department of Fish and Game. Since 1995, Campbell as been a natural resource consultant. He also worked nine years in the Alaska State Senate as legislative committee staff. He is a past member of the Juneau Assembly, Juneau Parks and Recreation Commission and the Juneau Planning Commission.

All three appointments are subject to legislative approval.
