Federal agencies award more than $8.5M in grants for Alaska projects

The Alaska congressional delegation announced March 23 that three federal agencies have awarded grants totaling more than $8.5 million for some Alaska projects.

The National Science Foundation has made grants to four University of Alaska Fairbanks projects that relate to climate and climate change. These projects consist of studies of circulation in the Arctic atmosphere; research into the carbon, water and energy balance of the Arctic landscape; research into the effect of climate warming on boreal forests; and the collaborative measurement of arctic winter precipitation and snow cover. A U.S. Department of Transportation grant of $1.9 million will go to Alaska Railroad Corporation’s International Airport Intermodal Facility.

And the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation has granted $10,000 to Girdwood Parks and Recreation to promote the education and awareness of weeds through workshops, classroom sessions and weed pulls.
