USCG has new commander at Valdez

The U.S. Coast Guard has new leadership at Valdez, the vital Alaska port where tankers take on loads of North Slope crude oil.

Cmdr. Benjamin J. Hawkins was installed as commanding officer of Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Valdez at a formal ceremony June 7 at the Valdez Convention and Civic Center.

Hawkins relieves Cmdr. Darryl P. Verfaillie, who will be promoted to captain and will report to a new post in Cleveland, Ohio, a Coast Guard press release said.

A Michigan native, Hawkins graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1992 and has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in naval architecture and marine engineering.

Hawkins most recently served as chief of the Human Element and Ship Design Division in the Office of Design and Engineering Standards at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C.
