Invasive species panel comes to Alaska

The federal Invasive Species Advisory Committee will meet in Anchorage May 12-14.

This is the first time the committee, which advises the National Invasive Species Council, will meet in Alaska.

The council, established in 1999 by President Clinton, is responsible for drafting regulations to prevent the spread of invasive species nationwide.

The meeting will take place in the National Park Service office, 240 W. 5th Ave., Room 114, in downtown Anchorage. Many organizations, including the Alaska Association of Conservations Districts, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be making presentations.

Meetings are open to the public and run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. There will be open public comment periods at the end of the first two days.
