Oil Patch Bits: Transcube works with NANA to fuel exploration

Transcube said March 25 that it has joined forces to work with NANA Management Services to power ice road guard shacks as ExxonMobil prepares to tap into a remote 8 trillion-cubic-foot natural gas reservoir at Point Thomson.

NMS is providing the Point Thomson campsite, which is only accessible by aircraft or boat during the summer. A 60-mile ice road from an Endicott operation center will allow winter access.

The 20-by-10-foot NANA guard shacks were designed to include a bathroom, refrigerator, microwave and foldout bed, in case of bad weather stranding workers. Powering each shack is a 10-kilowatt generator fueled by a Transcube diesel tank. “Our security group identified a need to build new guard shacks for ExxonMobil along the ice road,” said Joe Liska, director of enterprise development for NMS’s Camps Services division. “Environmental compliance is critical. The fuel tanks have a double-walled secondary containment system and are UL 142 rated.” Each generator uses one gallon of fuel per hour and runs 24 hours a day. At this rate, the 528-gallon Transcube tanks are supplying diesel for three weeks non-stop before needing a refill.

ExxonMobil put six guard shacks into action in January 2010.
