U.S. first quarter drilling activity up

Estimated completions of U.S. wells increased 9 percent in the first quarter of the year, compared to the first quarter of 2005, the American Petroleum Institute said April 12. The figures include oil and natural gas wells and dry holes.

API said an estimated 11,527 wells were completed in the first quarter, compared to an estimated 10,534 completions in the first quarter of 2005.

Natural gas completions are estimated at 6,957, up 8 percent from the first quarter of 2005, oil well completions at 3,358, up 10 percent, and dry holes at 1,212, a 16 percent increase. API said exploratory completions were up 12 percent and development completions up 9 percent in the quarter compared to the same quarter last year.

Estimated footage drilled was 63,386,000 feet, up 12 percent from the first quarter of 2005.
