National drilling rig count up 11 to 1,063

The number of rigs drilling for oil and natural gas in the U.S. was up by 11 the week ending Oct. 12 to 1,063.

At this time a year ago there were 928 active rigs.

Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes reported that 869 rigs targeted oil (up by eight from the previous week) and 193 targeted natural gas (up four). One was listed as miscellaneous (down one).

Among major oil and gas producing states, Texas was up eight rigs, New Mexico was up three and Louisiana was up two.

Colorado and Wyoming each gained one rig, and Oklahoma was down by one rig.

Alaska, California, North Dakota and Pennsylvania were unchanged from the previous week.

Baker Hughes shows Alaska with five active rigs, down one from a year ago.

The U.S. rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. It bottomed out in May 2016 at 404.
