Our Arctic Neighbors: Russian vessels collide in Arctic waters

The nuclear-powered icebreaker Yamal collided with the oil tanker Indiga during ice escort in the Kara Sea’s Gulf of Yenisey on March 16, BarentsObserver reported. The tanker received a 31-foot-long crack on the main deck from the impact. It was only carrying ballast at the time, and no environmental pollution was observed.

The Indiga is owned by Murmansk Shipping Co. and shuttles between an oil terminal in the Gulf of Ob and the floating storage vessel Belokamenka in Kola Bay. After the collision the tanker and the icebreaker headed to the White Sea, from where the tanker was escorted to Arkhangelsk for repairs.
