BP names Andy Inglis head of E&P

BP said Feb. 1 that Andy Inglis has been named a managing director of BP Group and will succeed Tony Hayward as chief executive of BP’s Exploration & Production business, effective immediately.

Inglis joined BP in 1980 and has held a number of E&P posts, most recently deputy chief executive of E&P and a member of BP’s Group Executive team.

Peter Sutherland, BP chairman, said in a statement that Inglis “will now be responsible for all of the group’s E&P business. This will allow Tony Hayward, as group CEO-designate, to focus on the transition, working closely with John Browne in the period to the end of July.” Hayward has been named to succeed Browne.

Inglis, 47, has been BP executive vice president and deputy chief executive of E&P since 2004, with responsibility for BP’s growth areas, including Azerbaijan, Angola, Algeria, the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, Egypt, Trinidad and the Asia-Pacific region.

Inglis has an M.A. in engineering from Pembroke College, Cambridge University; he joined BP in 1980 as a mechanical engineer working on various North Sea projects. In the late 1980s he held a series of commercial roles in BP Exploration in Aberdeen and London; in 1994 he moved to Alaska where he managed BP’s interest in the Kuparuk field, returning to London in 1996 as chief of staff for the upstream business. From 1997-99 he was responsible for leading BP’s activities in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.

In January 1999, following the merger of BP and Amoco, Inglis became vice president of BP’s U.S. Western Gas business unit; he joined the upstream executive committee as a group vice president in 2000 and in 2004 was appointed executive vice president.

Inglis is married and has five children between 14 years and 11 months (twins).
