The Explorers 2009: Welcome to ‘The Explorers’ 2009

Welcome to The Explorers, an annual magazine from Petroleum News that is released each November at the Resource Development Council for Alaska’s conference in Anchorage.

The Explorers was first published in 2002 as The Independents magazine, but in 2004 we changed the name to The Explorers because some of the newcomers exploring in Alaska (or planning to explore) were actually majors, not independents.

And although BP, another major, was no longer exploring for oil in the traditional sense of the word, the company was developing new oil pools inside existing units.

So, this magazine is about Alaska’s oil and gas explorers — independents and majors, alike.

We chose a different format for The Explorers this year, one that highlights exploration regions of the state and includes geology, exploration history and plans. Active explorers in each region are profiled in that region’s section. Please let me know if you like the new format. My email address is [email protected].
