Our Arctic Neighbors: Third tugboat ready for Kola Bay oil tankers

A naming ceremony took place in late July at the Sanmar construction yard in Tuzla, Turkey, for Russian company Sovcomflot’s third tugboat designed to support the fleet of tankers serving the Belokamenka floating oil terminal in Kola Bay.

The Captain Reutov is the last of the tugs built for this purpose, the company said in a release July 29. The other two, the Captain Popov and the Captain Adyukov, were delivered to Sovcomflot earlier this year.

A total of 9 million tons of oil (61.6 million barrels) is expected to be reloaded at Belokamenka in 2009. Sovcomflot is Russia’s largest shipping company. Its fleet comprises 138 vessels with a total deadweight of 9.6 million metric tons. The average age of vessels in the tanker fleet is less than six years.

The company signed an agreement with Shell in June to cooperate on potential liquefied natural gas projects in Russia, including in the Arctic.
