DNR names two new directors

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources has named two new directors - Sara Longan of Anchorage and Steve Masterman of Fairbanks.

Longan has been named director of the Office of Project Management and Permitting, replacing Tom Crafford, who has moved to the governor’s Washington, D.C., office.

Longan has worked for the state more than nine years, most recently as deputy director of the permitting office, responsible for permitting and administration of large-scale oil and gas, transportation and clean energy projects. Prior to that she was the policy and legislative advisor in the Division of Oil and Gas, and previously spent many years managing the biological analysis section of the Environmental Health Laboratory for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Prior to working for the state, Longan managed environmental science and water quality laboratories. She has a bachelor’s degree from the College of Natural Resources and a Master of Science in ecotoxicology from Oklahoma State University, and holds a doctorate in public health with a special focus on health, safety and environment.

Masterman heads DGGS

Masterman has been appointed director of DNR’s Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, replacing Bob Swenson who was named deputy commissioner of DNR last year, filling the vacancy created when Joe Balash was named commissioner.

Masterman joined DGGS in 2013 as division operations manager and has served as acting director since 2013. He has worked for the state of Alaska for 10 years. He arrived in Alaska in 1983 and has made it home for most of the past 30 years.

Masterman has 20 years of experience in the mineral industry, including generative exploration in Alaska, near-mine exploration in Peru and mine geology in Nevada.

In 2004 he joined the Alaska Department of Transportation where in managed the Northern Region’s engineering geology program.

Masterman earned a Bachelor of Science in mining geology from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, and a Master of Science in geological engineering from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
