AOGA’s Brady to retire; AEWC and Maggie Ahmaogak part ways; Persily heads to D.C.

Judy Brady, executive director of the Alaska Oil and Gas Association, plans to retire at the end of June after 14 years with the Anchorage-based group. AOGA’s deputy director Marilyn Crockett will take Brady’s place on July 1, the 37th anniversary of Crockett’s tenure with the 41-year-old industry association.

Brady started her career as a news editor for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner in 1963. In 1973 she was named chief administrative judge for the Alaska Native Claims Appeals Board for the U.S. Department of the Interior. In 1982, she became the executive director of Commonwealth North, followed by a stint as commissioner of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources under former Gov. Steve Cowper. Next, she headed up the Alaska Municipal Bond Bank Authority before assuming the position of executive director of AOGA in 1993.

“Judy has been an incredible asset for this organization and our industry,” AOGA President John Zager said. “She has had the confidence of the board of directors throughout her career at AOGA; not an easy task with so many competitive issues. … Judy has been the voice of the industry through some very tough times.”

Zager also expressed the board’s gratitude to Crockett. “Marilyn has the experience and knowledge of the industry that is so important to the success of the association.”

Crockett will be AOGA’s fourth executive director.

Maggie Ahmaogak fired by AEWC

The wife and daughter of a Native Alaska whaling captain has lost her position as the executive director of the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission. Maggie Ahmaogak, married to Barrow whaling captain George Ahmaogak Sr., and the daughter of Barrow whaling captain Arnold Brower Sr., was terminated by AEWC the weekend of April 14-15, Harry Brower told Petroleum News April 19. Brower is AEWC’s chairman.

George Ahmaogak is currently working for Shell E&P USA in Alaska. He previously served two terms as mayor of the North Slope Borough.

AEWC is a federally recognized not-for-profit entity organized in the late 1970s to protect bowhead whales, the subsistence whale hunt, and the traditional culture of its 10 member northern Alaska villages.

Larry Persily heads to Washington for Gov. Palin

Larry Persily has been hired by Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to serve in the state’s Washington, D.C., office.

Currently editorial page editor at the Anchorage Daily News, Persily will begin work for the state on May 7 as associate director for oil, gas, and renewable energy, commerce and transportation. He will be “responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and advocating with respect to the following issues: ANWR, natural gas pipeline, OCS development, pipeline corrosion, international trade, Arctic Council, surface transportation, aviation, telecommunications, commerce, renewable energy, and finance,” the governor’s office said in an April 18 press release.

John Katz, who heads up Alaska’s office in the nation’s capitol, was pleased with Persily’s appointment. “With the changes in Washington, D.C., Alaska is facing many challenges. Larry’s hiring completes Gov. Palin’s team and gives us additional capacity to address these challenges and opportunities.”

“Larry has excellent qualifications — knowledge of the issues, experience in the public and private sectors, and?analytic and advocacy skills,” Palin said. “I am pleased that he has joined our team.”

Persily was deputy commissioner of the Alaska Department of Revenue from June 1999 to June 2003. He has also worked for several publications in Alaska, including Petroleum News, The Associated Press, Juneau Empire, and The Anchorage Times.
