OSHA safety pact with Alaska companies

The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration has formed a new alliance with some companies in the Alaska oil and gas industry to promote work-related safety and health. Union Oil Co. of California (Chevron), Peak Oilfield Service Co., Nabors Alaska Drilling Inc., CUDD Pressure Control Inc., McKinley Service and Equipment Inc. and ESS Support Services are involved in the alliance, OSHA said in October.

An implementation team of representatives from OSHA and the participating businesses will conduct quarterly visits to participating facilities and the Anna and King Salmon platforms in Cook Inlet, OSHA said.

Goal to foster safety

“This alliance was formed because OSHA and the oil and gas industry recognize the value of establishing a collaborative relationship to foster safer and more healthful American workplaces,” said Scott Ketcham, OSHA’s area director in Anchorage. “By disseminating information, accessing training resources and providing guidance, this alliance will improve the safety and health performance of employees.”

The alliance agreement involves achieving goals in training and education, as well as in outreach and communication. The agreement also seeks to promote a national dialogue on workplace safety by publicizing health and safety case studies.

OSHA currently has more than 500 similar alliances throughout the United States. The alliances form part of an effort by U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao to improve workplace safety and health through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies, OSHA said.
