BLM moves forward on Pappy Draw

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has released a scoping notice for EnCana’s proposed Pappy Draw exploratory coalbed natural gas expanded project, the BLM’s Lander, Wyo., field office said May 20.

EnCana Oil and Gas (USA) Inc. has submitted a proposal for a pilot project of 20 coalbed methane exploratory wells in an area 70 miles southeast of Lander, in Wyoming’s northeastern Sweetwater County and southeastern Fremont County.

The original proposal for the field came from Patina Oil and Gas in 2002, but EnCana later obtained the unit and expanded the scope of the project.

The plan now calls for six wells to be completed in the East Pappy Draw unit, including one for water injection. Eight wells (one for water injection) would go into the North Pappy Draw unit, and five (one for water) in the Pappy Draw unit.

One well is already in place in the Pappy Draw unit, initially drilled to the Frontier formation and then recompleted to the coal zone. That well has been shut-in until an environmental assessment is completed.

Comment on the scoping notice will be accepted until June 19.
