Arctic Directory: Greer has been providing superior products and welding for almost 60 years

To meet its customers’ needs Greer recently updated its equipment with Motoman robotics system

Q. What do you most want people to know about your company?

A. Greer can supply your storage tank and fabrication needs to all of Alaska either through our Anchorage and Fairbanks locations or from our Lakewood, Washington facility.

Q. Where is your company located?

A. Greer has two plants in Fairbanks, one in Anchorage, a yard in Palmer and a 4-acre facility in Lakewood Washington with access to the Port of Tacoma.

Q. What year was the company founded and by whom?

A. Fairbanks – 1952 by Glen Greer, Anchorage – 1972 by Ruth Greer, Washington – 1995 by Mark Greer

Q. What is the company’s primary business sector?

A. Storage vessels of multiple alloys, steel and aluminum as well as stainless steel manufacturing and most recently, a plastic rotational molding facility in Alaska.

Q. Are there important projects the company is currently a part of or has done recently?

A. A 61,000 gallon, horizontal, shop-fabricated lined potable water tank. It’s one of the largest shop-built tanks in the country. We also created large stainless steel tanks for Oilfield Services as well as mine-facility processing tanks for the Mystery Creek Mine.

Q. How many employees does your company have?

A. We employ 75 people with 50 in Alaska and 25 in Washington.

Q. Describe the equipment your company might use and are there any new purchases planned?

A. Greer recently purchased large heavy plates rolls, water jet cutters and is currently pursuing a large press brake for metal forming. We also recently purchased a Motoman robotics system.

Q. Is your company expanding any of its operations or locations?

A. We expanded our Washington plant, which is now larger than either our Fairbanks or Anchorage facilities and we are considering a fabrication facility in Palmer.

Q. Is the company changing any of its services?

A. We are constantly looking for more efficient, state-of-the-art fabrication processes that can benefit our company and our customers.

Q. What is your company’s main strength or its edge over the competition?

A. Our willingness to adapt or purchase the required tooling to make operations or new projects more efficient.

Q. What new markets, clients or projects did your company attract in the last year?

A. Greer is always open to niche markets, multiple production runs of repetitive items. The Motoman robotic cell will help in that endeavor.

Q. What is the most challenging job the company has undertaken? 

A. A 19 foot diameter vertical storage tank built in the middle of winter for delivery to North Pole. They had coatings inside and out. All aspects of the project were closely monitored with accurate quality control documentation.

Q. What are the biggest obstacles to completing work the company undertakes?

A. Finding a skilled workforce and working in the severe Arctic weather conditions.

Q. Does your company have an anniversary or other landmark event coming up?

A. Greer will be celebrating 60 years of business in 2012.

Q. What is the average length of time employee’s work for the company?

A. 10+ years.

Q. What is your company’s safety record and what steps does the company take to ensure a safe work environment?

A. Greer is always improving safety procedures and its “In Shop Training”.

Q. Has your company been involved in any community projects or charities events?

A. Greer donates regularly to families in need and various community organizations.
