88 Energy spuds Icewine exploration well

The Icewine No. 1 exploration well on the southern North Slope was spud Oct. 22, 88 Energy Ltd. said in an Oct. 23 statement.

The well is planned to a total depth of 11,600 feet with a primary objective in the HRZ shale formation. 88 Energy said there may be conventional potential in the shallower Brookian and deeper Kuparuk horizons and those horizons will be tested if warranted. Drilling is projected to take about 30 days.

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas, approved a lease plan of operation for Icewine in September. The plan approval was for Accumulate Energy Alaska, a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian-based 88 Energy. The well is on a tract acquired by Burgundy Xploration, a joint venture partner of Accumulate Energy, in a state oil and gas lease sale. Division records show Accumulate Energy holds 85,909 acres of state oil and gas leases; Burgundy Xploration holds 12,273 acres.

The well is being drilled from the Franklin Bluffs gravel pad adjacent to the Dalton Highway some 30 miles south of Deadhorse.
