Arctic Directory October 2015: Hawk celebrates 30 years serving the energy industry

Company has worked over one million man-hours with no lost time injuries

Q. What do you most want people to know about your company?

A. Hawk is an Alaska-based firm specializing in project management services for owners, contractors, developers and engineers. We serve the energy industry, the public sector, and private organizations responsible for delivering major projects.

We specialize in providing professional staffing and quality/inspection services to the energy industry, as well as serving as expert consultants in all phases of planning, design and management of construction and operations of oil and gas facilities.

Q. Where is your company located?

A. ALASKA: Hawk Consultants, LLC 670 W. Fireweed Lane, Ste. 201, Anchorage, Alaska 99503

TEXAS: Hawk Technical Services, LLC 16522 Avenplace Rd., Tomball, Texas 77377

Q. What year was the company founded and by whom?

A. Maynard Tapp started Hawk’s predecessor company in 1985, and Mike Jens and Dave Norton joined as partners in 2003.

Q. What is your company’s primary business activity?

A. Hawk provides services to clients in the following areas: facility and pipeline integrity management; front-end planning and project feasibility; contracting strategy and project delivery methods; budgeting, scheduling and reporting systems; health, safety and environmental management; quality assurance and inspection services; supply chain management services; engineering, project and construction management; dispute resolution and claims management.

Q. Who are the four principals of the company and what is their background?

A. Maynard Tapp holds an extensive project controls background both domestically and internationally. Maynard specializes in planning, cost control, and effective project control strategies.

Dave Norton is a registered professional civil engineer and has a long and distinguished history working on Alaskan oil and gas projects, specializing in engineering, permitting, integrity management, and regulatory strategy.

Mike Jens is a registered professional mechanical engineer and has been active in the engineering and construction industry since 1968. He focuses on project and construction management services for both industrial and commercial projects. He is an experienced claims consultant who has successfully resolved over 500 construction disputes.

Pat McQuillan joined Hawk in 2014 after a 25 year career in the inspection services and technical staffing industry. Over the course of his career, he has managed all aspects of the business including recruitment and human resources, accounting and finance, operations management, systems development and project management, sales and marketing, and executive strategy development and implementation.

Q. How many employees does your company have?

A. Our professional staff includes 80-100 people working for clients in Alaska, North Dakota, California and Texas.

Q. Is your company expanding any of its operations or locations?

A. In 2014 we opened a new Texas office to serve the lower 48 and international clients.

Our operations are based in Houston to work alongside our Houston-based client project management teams and central procurement groups, and to emphasize quality/inspection services as a new business line. Pat McQuillan joined Hawk as the General Manager of the Houston-based operation.

Hawk has long recognized the importance of the Houston market and its unofficial designation as the epicenter of the energy industry. Many Alaskan projects have roots in Houston and with the establishment of the new office in Texas, Hawk aims to broaden its horizons and expand its sphere of influence to both domestic and international projects.

Maynard Tapp, Managing Partner, says “Hawk’s current clients typically have service requirements beyond Alaska. By establishing a Texas-based office Hawk will be able to better serve clients in the industrial Gulf Coast and in international locations. There are some natural synergies between Texas and Alaska that Hawk will be able to leverage to the benefit of our clients.”

Dave Norton, Partner, says “Pat has a deep well of experience in our business and we believe with Pat on board Hawk is well positioned to expand its presence and provide improved resources and services to its clientele. Hawk has collaborated with Pat over the years and we are excited about him coming on board.”

Pat McQuillan is equally excited about the new opportunity, noting that “Hawk’s client-focused, flexible and responsive approach will be well received in the Houston market.”

Q. Does your company have an anniversary or other landmark event coming up?

A. We are celebrating our 30th year of operation in 2015 and we are proud of our reputation in the business community that we have developed over the years. We are supportive of the next generation of Alaskans that will be working in the oil patch by granting scholarships at UAA and with the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP).

Q. What is your company’s safety record?

A. We take pride in having worked over one million hours with no lost time injuries and we were awarded the Alaska Governor’s Safety Award of Excellence for our million-hour milestone.

Q. What is the address of your company’s Web site?

A. More information about Hawk can be found at www.hawkpros.com
