Arctic Directory: URS selected for design improvement

URS Corp. said June 2 that it has been selected by the Department of Veterans Affairs to design gravesite development and cemetery improvements at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. The Jefferson Barracks Cemetery, designated a national cemetery in 1866, consists of 331 acres containing approximately 180,000 interments and is located along the bluffs of the Mississippi River. The project will expand the existing cemetery by preparing 31 acres of land to provide approximately 24,000 pre-placed, double-depth crypts, four columbarium sites totaling 9,100 niches and a new committal service shelter. The new initiative is part of a five-phase, major construction project at the facility which will expand the cemetery, consolidate the outpatient functions of Jefferson Barracks Medical Center to a single location and relocate the National Cemetery Administration National Training Center. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2010, with the final phase of construction anticipated for 2014. Total costs for the project are estimated at $26 million.

URS Corp. is a leading provider of engineering, construction and technical services for public agencies and private sector companies around the world.
