Q. What is the official name of your program?

A. GCI Industrial Telecom

Q. Is your firm a subsidiary or affiliate of other companies? If so, please name those firms and their relationship to your company.

A. GCI Communication Corp. is a publicly traded company. GCI Industrial Telecom is part of GCI Business, a business unit within GCI Communication Corp.

Q. What do you most want people to know about your company?

A. GCI Industrial Telecom was founded to respond to the unique telecommunication needs of energy producers and explorers in Alaska. Over the past 15 years, our capabilities have been hardened by delivering safe, reliable services in the remotest regions of North America. We listen, we design, and we deliver based on the best available technologies available. We work with our partners to evaluate and recommend how to better use technologies to increase the value of their program.

Q. Where is your company located?

A. GCI Industrial Telecom is headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska and has offices in Deadhorse, Alaska and Houston, Texas. We also have resources staged in Lafayette, LA and have set up remote offices based on project needs.

Q. What year was the company founded and by whom?

A. GCI was founded in 1979 by Ron Duncan and Robert Walp with the goal of introducing long-distance competition to Alaska. Since that time, the company has grown to be one of the nation’s premier integrated telecommunication providers. Today, Ron Duncan still heads the company as CEO and the company employs more than 2,300 professionals and has a current run rate of $800 million. GCI Industrial Telecom was formed in 2001.

Q. What is your company’s primary business activity?

A. GCI Industrial Telecom provides full life cycle support to the energy sector. This includes professional engineering, consulting, project management, construction and commercial data, wireless and voice services. We also have a VSAT satellite service offering for connecting remote projects throughout North America, and a host of managed technology services..

Q. Are there important projects the company is currently a part of or has done recently?

A. Being an integrated part of ALL of the recent production facilities (aka Industrial construction) efforts on the North Slope has helped us to develop a solid reputation with our partners. Prudhoe Bay, Oooguruk, Nikaitchuq, Badami, and Point Thomson are all projects we have explored, engineered, and constructed as a part of the respective owner’s project team.

Q. How many employees does your company have?

A. GCI Industrial Telecom currently has 80 full-time employees. GCI currently employs over 2,300 full time with another 400 part-time employees and contractors.

Q. Is the company changing any of its services or products?

A. GCI has developed a number of managed solutions which can allow our partners to leverage the latest available technology without large capital outlays. Our industrial mobile communication solution provides users with hosted voice and managed data over a secure wireless connection. We have also recently introduced managed WiFi and managed firewall services.

Q. What is your company’s main strength or its edge over the competition?

A. GCI is fortunate to be considered an integrated partner of our clients. We understand the needs of our partners and the cycles in the Oil and Gas patch. Our team is comprised of best-in-class technicians, engineers and project managers who have direct oil patch experience. GCI Industrial Telecom recently celebrated 2.8 million man hours in some of the most extreme conditions without a lost time accident.

Q. What is the most challenging work/contract the company has undertaken? 

A. During the Macondo Oil spill response effort, GCI Industrial Telecom coordinated and deployed a complex interagency two-way communication system (2-Way radios) for the coast line from Pascagula, FL to Freeport, TX. We completed the majority of the design and implementation in under four months! Once installed we maintained the system and achieved over 40,000 hours of safe work time. We are nimble and know how to hustle while being safe.

Q. Does your company have an anniversary or other landmark event coming up?

A. GCI is celebrating its 15th anniversary in the Pacific Northwest in August and tripled its office space in Seattle.

Q. What is your company’s safety record? What steps does the company take to ensure a safe work environment?

A. Safety Matters to GCI. GCI Industrial Telecom has recently passed 2.8 Million hours since our last lost time accident (LTA). We take safety very seriously and empower our employees to take the steps necessary to ensure we provide a safe work environment.

Q. Has your company been involved in any community projects or charity events?

A. GCI believes in connecting with and making a lasting impact in the communities we serve. From supporting nonprofit organizations and youth education to preserving our rich culture and engaging in community celebrations, we’re proud to support programs that help build a stronger Alaska.
