Halcon asks NDIC to establish 103 overlapping 2,560-acre units

Halcon Resources, filing as HRC Operating LLC, has submitted applications which the North Dakota Industrial Commission will consider in hearings on Nov. 20 and 21 asking for the creation of a total of 103 separate 2,560-acre spacing units spanning 13 fields in Dunn, McKenzie, Mountrail and Williams counties. In all cases, Halcon wants authorization from the commission to drill one or more wells on or near the section lines of the existing 1,280-acre spacing units comprising the proposed 2,560s.

Most of the proposed units, 75 in all, are in northwest Williams County in the Strandahl, Good Luck, Little Muddy, Climax, Marmon, Otter, Lone Tree Lake, Dublin and Ellisville fields. The largest concentrations of the proposed Williams County units are in the Strandahl and Climax fields where Halcon is asking for 20 units in each. Another seven of the proposed units are in the Marmon field with six more in the Otter field. The remaining 2,560s Halcon is requesting in Williams County are in the Little Muddy, Lone Tree Lake, Dublin, Ellisville and/or Good Luck fields.

In Dunn County, Halcon is seeking the establishment of 18 units in the Eagle Nest and/or the McGregory Buttes fields in the northeast region of the county. The remaining 10 overlapping 2,560-acre units Halcon wants created are in the Antelope and/or Four Bears fields in northeast McKenzie and southwest Mountrail counties.

Hess and XTO

In Dunn and McKenzie counties, Hess Corp. is asking for the creation of 20 overlapping 2,560-acre spacing units for the purpose of drilling one or more wells on each. Eleven of the proposed units are in the Little Knife and Lone Butte fields in western Dunn County. Another five of the units are in the Ellsworth field and three more are in the Sather Lake field, both in central McKenzie County. The remaining proposed unit is in the Blue Buttes field in northeast McKenzie County.

XTO Energy is asking the commission to create a total of 18 overlapping 2,560-acre units in five contiguous fields, all in southeast Williams County. XTO wants permission to drill a horizontal well on or near the section line of the two existing 1,280-acre units that will make up each 2,560. Eleven of XTO’s 18 proposed spacing units are in the West Capa field, with three more in the Dollar Joe field, two in the Dollar Joe and/or Beaver Lodge fields, one in the Dollar Joe and/or West Bank field, and one other in the West Capa and/or Capa fields.

Marathon and Whiting

Marathon Oil is asking the commission to create three 2,560-acre units in central Dunn County, two in the Bailey field and one in the Murphy Creek field. Marathon is also seeking authorization to drill one or more wells between the existing 1,280-acre units that comprise the proposed 2,560s.

Whiting Oil and Gas submitted applications asking for the creation of three 1,280-acre units, one in the Elkhorn Ranch field and two that overlap the Elkhorn Ranch, Roosevelt and Cooks Peak fields in northwest Billings County. Whiting is also seeking authorization to drill four wells on each unit.

Other spacing unit apps

Continental Resources wants the commission to create one overlapping 2,560-acre unit in the Sanish field in southern Mountrail County and authorize the company to drill multiple horizontal wells on a pad in that spacing unit. Continental also wants the commission to create a 640-acre unit in the Blacktail field in northwest Billings County and be allowed to drill one horizontal on that unit.

In the Patent Gate field in north-central McKenzie County, Zavanna is asking that the commission create a 1,280-acre spacing unit and allow it to drill a wildcat well on that spacing unit.

Enduro Operating wants the commission to establish one 320-acre spacing unit in the Hay Draw field in southwest McKenzie County and authorize the drilling of one well.

SHD Oil and Gas wants the commission to establish a 1,920-acre unit in the Deep Water Creek Bay field in far northwest McLean County and grant permission to drill multiple horizontal wells.

Zenergy Inc. filed an application asking the commission to create an overlapping 2,560-acre unit in the Eightmile field in southwest Williams County and authorize Zenergy to drill multiple wells on the new 2,560.

ConocoPhillips, filing as Burlington Resources, is asking that the commission establish one 1,280-acre unit in the Corral Creek unit in north-central Dunn County and that the commission allow up to seven wells be drilled on the unit. A portion of one of the sections comprising the proposed unit is outside of the established unit. The company is seeking permission to develop the full unit as well as other adjacent sections lying outside the unit boundary.

SM Energy is asking the commission to terminate an existing order establishing a 960-acre unit in the Phelps Bay field in northeast McKenzie, and then establish a 640-acre unit from a portion of the 960 and allow it to drill up to eight wells on the 640. The Phelps Bay field is a small field consisting of only the existing 960-acre unit.

Luff Exploration Co. wants the commission to terminate a 960-acre unit and instead establish a 640-acre unit in the Corey Butte field in far southern Bowman County along the South Dakota border for the purpose of drilling an additional Red River well. Luff is also seeking authorization to construct and use a reserve pit for drilling all or part of the additional well.
