Arctic Directory 2016: Wedgewood Resort, Bear Lodge turn gravel pit into lake

From gravel pit to wetland habitat was the objective of Fountainhead Development owner Tim Cerny in the acreage surrounding Wedgewood Resort and Bear Lodge in Fairbanks. His goal was to reclaim the land for a wildlife sanctuary, so guests could enjoy a peaceful walk around a pristine lake while vacationing at the 105-arce property.

“Guests can enjoy nature walk, view wildlife, and birding without having to go beyond the boundaries of the company’s hotel property, Wedgewood Resort and Bear Lodge,” Cerny said.

Wander Lake was once a deep, steep-sided gravel pit offering limited habitat to birds, company official Deanna Brandon said. Reclamation began by enhancing the surrounding area to provide habitat for a wider diversity of wildlife. Excavation included new shallows, creating islands and peninsulas, introducing aquatic plants, planting willows and native grass on the banks. Additionally, Cerny had non-game fish transplanted into the lake to provide a food source for the loons, grebes, and other waterfowl nesting at the sanctuary.

“The sanctuary’s nature trails connect to Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge creating miles of easy walking trails for all to experience,” he said.

Wedgewood Resort is a “destination in itself,” Cerny said. The resort includes 157 guest rooms at Bear Lodge, 305, one and two bedroom residential-style suites and an antique auto and fashion museum. All conveniently situated minutes from downtown Fairbanks.
