Alpine on schedule; all modules moved to pad

Alpine is on schedule for startup, ARCO Alaska Inc. spokeswoman Dawn Patience told PNA April 17. The ice road is still open, although, Patience said, all of the production modules have been moved.

About 40 miles of ice road were build, some 20 miles of that across sea ice. Fifteen production modules with a combined weight of more than 12,000 tons were moved from Kuparuk to Alpine.

Portions of the sea ice road across active river channels were 20 feet thick, Patience said. And because of the huge modules that had to be built, the ice road was the equivalent of a multiple-lane highway.

ARCO permits sidetrack to Spark exploration well

ARCO Alaska Inc. received a drilling permit for a sidetrack to its National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska Spark well on April 14. The original well, the 1 Spark, was a vertical hole permitted March 17 some 12 miles west of Nuiqsut. The 1A Spark is a directional hole permitted to a bottom hole southeast of the original well.

ARCO's NPR-A Clover location received a drilling permit Feb. 10 and ARCO permitted a well at a third NPR-A location, Rendezvous, on April 5.

ARCO Alaska spokeswoman Dawn Patience said April 17 that they are trying to get all three locations drilled this season. All other information about the company's exploration drilling activities are confidential, Patience said.
