Aurora Gas to drill at Nicolai

Aurora Gas LLC. said today that it has executed a drilling contract with Inlet Drilling Alaska Inc. of Kenai to drill at its Nicolai Creek gas field on the west side of Cook Inlet.

Aurora Vice President G. Scott Pfoff said in a statement, “This is a very exciting project. We plan to re-enter a well that has been shut in for a number of years, and use the latest technology to recomplete the well and restore it to production.”

Aurora has a 100 percent working interest in the field, which it acquired from Marathon Oil and Unocal in two separate transactions earlier this year.

“We have been working very hard to make this project happen before year end, and the weather has thus far, cooperated. If there were significant amounts of ice in the Cook Inlet, we would be unable to run the barges that will be critical to the operation; fortunately, it hasn’t been cold enough yet for ice to present a problem,” Pfoff said.

Aurora anticipates approximately 14 days to complete the work and test the well. If the project is successful, Aurora said it will install production facilities and lay about one mile of pipeline to connect the well to an existing natural gas pipeline in the vicinity.

Aurora is a privately held Alaska company. It is affiliated with Aurora Power Resources Inc., a local natural gas marketing firm.

Unocal names Charles Williamson CEO

Unocal Corp. said its board of directors has elected Charles R. Williamson as chief executive officer. Williamson, currently executive vice president, international operations, will succeed Roger C. Beach, who will retire as chairman and CEO at the end of December.

The company also said that Timothy H. Ling has been named president and chief operating officer. Ling is currently executive vice president, North America operations. John W. Creighton Jr., one of Unocal's outside directors, has been elected non-executive chairman of the board of directors. All appointments are effective Jan. 1.
