Spartan 151 at Homer, Customs clears for U.S. entry

The Spartan 151 is in the United States. The jack-up rig arrived in Kachemak Bay on Sunday night, according to Escopeta Oil Co. the Houston-based independent that plans to use the rig for an offshore drilling program.

The rig is currently at Homer, where it underwent an inspection by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection yesterday, according to Escopeta contractor Steve Sutherlin.

“It’s cleared in the United States, but we have to notify them before we move it,” Sutherlin told Petroleum News this morning as he went to deliver the notification.

The rig is set to go from Homer directly to Kitchen Lights, the offshore unit in the upper Cook Inlet where Escopeta must drill a well to the pre-Tertiary zone by Oct. 31 in order to keep its State of Alaska leases. The first will be in the Corsair prospect within the unit.

The rig left the Gulf of Mexico in March, sailed around the tip of South America and spent several weeks off the coast of British Columbia because of legal and repair issues.
