ARCO is one of four recipients of awards for environmental stewardship from the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.
Receiving the awards during the June 12 IOGCC Midyear Meeting in Lexington, Ky., were ARCO Inc.; Eastern States Exploration Co.; Kern County, Calif.; and Kansas Oil and Gas Museum Foundation.
ARCO, winner in the major company division, was recognized for its pollution prevention program. Founded in 1989 as a grassroots effort on Alaska’s North Slope, the program has spread to all other ARCO facilities in Alaska. It encourages waste minimization by recognizing employees for their environmental “good deeds” with awards and prizes.
Eastern States Exploration Co. received the award in the independent company category for distributing trees as part of an annual program to foster tree planting on the Sproul State Forest in Pennsylvania.
Kern County, Calif., winner in the environmental partnership category, received recognition for the plan it developed to protect endangered species.
The award for outstanding efforts in energy education was given to the Kansas Oil and Gas Museum Foundation, which created a museum in central Kansas to preserve the history of the state’s oil and natural gas industry and to provide educational opportunities for students and the public.
The IOGCC, founded in 1935 to ensure the efficient recovery of domestic petroleum resources, represents the governors of 30 oil and gas producing states.
