AOGCC approves Oooguruk-Torok EOR Pioneer Natural Resources estimates recovery of 20% with enhanced oil recovery, using immiscible-water-alternating-gas injection Kristen Nelson Petroleum News
The Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has approved an application from Pioneer Natural Resources Alaska for injection of fluids for enhanced recovery in the Oooguruk-Torok oil pool.
The commission approved pool rules for the accumulation last year.
The Oooguruk-Torok oil pool will be developed initially from the existing offshore Oooguruk Drill Site, ODS, and upon successful development from ODS, the commission said, “additional development may occur from two new onshore drill sites, named Nuna Drill Site 1 and Nuna Drill Site 2, located on the eastern side of the Colville River Delta.”
A phased development is planned, with 26 horizontal wells split evenly between producers and injectors; all wells will be fracture stimulated.
IWAG
The commission said an immiscible-water-alternating-gas-injection enhanced oil recovery project is planned, with production and injection managed to maintain reservoir pressure near the original measured pressure.
Injection water would include seawater and potential future produced water.
Injection gas would come from Oooguruk or Kuparuk River process facilities.
“Although the future availability of gas for injection purposes cannot be predicted, some form of IWAG will occur on one or more injection patterns,” the commission said.
Recovery The commission said Pioneer estimates that primary recovery would be some 5 percent of original oil in place, OOIP, and that IWAG would recover an additional 15 percent of OOIP, with a low of 5 percent and a high of 25 percent for incremental IWAG recovery. Combined recovery would range from 10 percent to 30 percent of OOIP, with the median 20 percent recovery being 138 million barrels from 690 million barrels of OOIP at Oooguruk-Torok.
OOIP is estimated at 50 million barrels at the offshore Oooguruk drill side; 290 million barrels at the onshore core area; and 350 million barrels at the onshore expansion area.
The commission said Pioneer has been producing the Oooguruk-Torok since March 2010.
Injection is expected to start in October.
Production is expected to average between 4,000 and 9,000 barrels per day over a 20 to 30 year project life, with peak production between 7,000 and 15,000 bpd and injection averaging between 5,000 and 12,000 barrels of water per day.
The commission said the Oooguruk-Torok is an early Cretaceous-aged turbidite reservoir. The API gravity of Torok oil measures 24 degrees.
