New seismic vibrator gets trial run on North Slope

Petroleum News Alaska Staff

Seismic companies working on the North Slope this winter got to try out a new seismic vibrator that is being touted by its manufacturer as the right machine for the environmentally sensitive slope.

Doug Kirk, sales manager for Houston-based Input/Output Inc., told PNA that model XVIB is “capable of low ground pressure in environmentally sensitive terrain.

“We feel the timing is right to come out with this vehicle, especially with ANWR on the horizon,” Kirk said. “We’re very pleased with the reports on the unit.”

Input/Output is shooting for production late this year.

The price tag on the XVIB? “In the $700,000 range,” Kirk said.
