VECO Corp. in top 50 design firms nationwide

VECO Corp. said June 15 that it had more than $168 million in 1999 engineering revenues and has been ranked 50th in the country for engineering and design by Engineering News-Record.

The company said the annual Engineering News-Record score is regarded as the “Fortune 500” of the engineering and design industry.

VECO was also named No. 19 in industrial process and petroleum engineering and No. 14 in power engineering.

“This is a proud moment for the employees of VECO Corp., who have worked hard to establish our company as an industry leader in Alaska and around the world,” said VECO Corp. President Pete Leathard.

VECO began in the oilfield business and has acquired leading engineering design firms in Bellingham, Wash., Calgary, Alberta, Denver, Colo., and Baton Rouge, La. The company said those acquisitions helped to bring to Alaska millions of dollars in engineering work previously performed in the Lower 48.

“We always knew we could perform the big engineering jobs in Alaska. Now, with giant sea-lift module projects in full swing for the second year in a row, our clients can identify VECO’s Alaskan productivity as a positive influence on their bottom line,” said Leathard.

More than 400 design personnel in Alaska

VECO said it has more than 400 design personnel in Alaska and 70 registered professional engineers, making it the largest design firm in the state.

Engineering News-Record also ranked VECO No. 23 in the international design category. The company said it has ongoing projects in Canada, Mexico, Russia, Venezuela, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Yemen, Taiwan and China.

“We recognize that as a company we needed to be able to add more value for our customers. And that value comes in the engineering and design functions,” said Leathard, who said he is particularly proud of his company’s time-tested Arctic design capabilities.

“We’ve got the know-how and the experience for engineering and design in the Arctic. This is something we can export around the world,” Leathard said.

Engineering News-Record is a weekly publication for the engineering and construction industry. More details on the Top 500 Design Firms are available on the website: http://www.enr.com/dbase/2000top1to50.asp.
