PETROLEUM DIRECTORY: Schlumberger opens center in Canada for fluids study

Schlumberger Oilfield Services has opened a new Reservoir Fluids Center in Edmonton, Canada. The opening was announced Jan. 27.

The center will have 60 employees altogether. Research will focus on fluids and their extraction, including questions about heavy oil development.

“There is growing interest in the production and exploitation of heavier, more viscous oils — up to and including bitumen mining — which requires better understanding of the reservoir and the fluid behavior,” said Claude Durocher, vice president for Schlumberger Canada.

The center has 9,000 square feet of lab space, plus 6,500 square feet for equipment manufacturing and assembly, along with offices for researchers, software developers and administrators. The whole facility covers about 30,000 square feet.

The new center brings to 23 the number of Schlumberger research centers around the world.
