Natural gas market poised to meet record demand

Petroleum News Alaska Staff

U.S. demand for natural gas, which has increased 14 percent since 1990, is expected to exceed in 1999 a record level of 22.1 trillion cubic feet last seen in 1972, federal energy officials say.

By 2020, consumption is expected to increase by 50 percent over 1998 levels, fueled largely by use in electricity generation, the federal Energy Department said in a report issued May 7.

Natural gas has become the fuel of choice for most new and planned electric generating units as new gas fired generating technologies offer lower initial costs, higher efficiencies and less adverse environmental effects than other fossil fuels.
