Tundra opens for authorized summer travel

The Alaska Division of Mining, Land and Water said July 18 that it has opened North Slope tundra to authorized off-road travel by summer-approved off-road vehicles.

The division said the opening applies only to operators with valid off-road vehicle travel permits for state-owned North Slope lands. Approvals are issued on a case-by-case basis, the division said, and operators need to contact the division prior to each off-road travel event.

Only vehicles tested and approved for summer travel by the division are authorized to access tundra and operators are required to avoid damaging tundra. The division has stipulations for summer off-road vehicle travel which provide guidelines.

For information contact the division’s northern regional office at 907-451-2740 or its North Slope office at 907-659-2830.
