Canada pumps millions into gem, minerals exploration

The Canadian government is pumping C$4 million into the hunt for gems and minerals in its three northern territories, answering a plea from the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut for support.
Indian Affairs and Northern Development Minister Robert Nault announced May 20 that the federal money will be spent on mapping, which is welcome news for the largely unmapped Nunavut which needs more information to help decision-making by explorers.
In Dawson City, Yukon, on May 15, Nault said his government is anxious to “promote a healthy northern mining industry which will attract investors and provide sustainable economic and employment opportunities in the north.”
Yukon Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Archie Lang said the three territories have an “abundance of world-class mineral deposits and resources, with excellent exploration prospects.
“Governments’ on-going support for a responsible, robust mining industry will help Canada’s North achieve its potential,” he said.
NWT Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development Minister Jim Antoine said there is an urgent need for co-operation if the mining industry is to remain a “driving force in the economy” of the NWT. Nunavut Sustainable Development Minister Olayuk Akesuk was enthusiastic about working with Nault’s department and the Geological Survey of Canada to advance the mapping process.
Nunavut already offers prospectors up to C$5,000 a year and has attracted an average 35 prospectors a year since 1999.
